World Building Week 7: Santa Christmas Card

For this week our brief is to create a Christmas card that must include Santa Clause.

I think i would like to revisit my old character 'Kobo: The Merchant' and temporarily turn him into 'Kobo Clause' for this assignment. He is my first character design that i took to a finished result and is one of my best pieces even now. I've included him in most of my assignments before coming to UCA so i'd like to do it again now. I am hoping to get the concept done as quick as i can so that i can get him modelled in Zbrush and do a paintover for the final card, however as we have lots of work to do with the Campus project and other client work, i may not have the time to explore a new medium. Here is my reference sheet so far:

Here is the original concept of Kobo with a very quick and rough paintover to test how he could look as Santa, i quite like it. Though of course i will do more than just add a beard and change colours.

Here is a scan of some beard variation sketches, i would like to look at more references and do more of these, as the beard is a big focal point.

Today (Wednesday) my RSI has been comming back. I suffered from it last year and it comes back every no and then when i work too hard. I've spent all day trying to finish this and it's now 1:30am and i can't risk my hand so i'll call it a night.

Admittiadly this probably still would have been finished if i started the final card painting sooner but i really wanted to get a character concept done first as better practice - which isn't finished either.

Here are some more sketches from the week that i scanned today:

Here is a very unfinished concept of Kobo's new look.

And the start to the card painting. I hope that i will be able to find time to finish this off, if that is okay.

Arrived into class at 9am and manged to put 2 hours extra into this, so here is a more final result, still not perfect.
