World Building Week 9: SCI-FI Ship

This week we have to design a Sci-fi ship (or vehicle, but must be hard surface). We also have the Christmas break to finish off the final design. Initial research and sketches to be handed in next lesson before we break up.

I'm going to be working with Alex and Dani next term on our group project which will be involving a ship. Therefore me and Alex may work on this task together to create concepts towards the project.

However i am also going to write up my own design. More fun!

Studies

Here are some perspective studies from last year, i did lots but these are the most relevant.

My Ship

Currently my idea is to design a transport ship, nothing too massive. More like a double-decker bus in terms of scale. And here is a rough backstory to the ship and it's owner, to help give my design purpose and to influence my design decisions;

"Franko is an adventurer and all-round animal lover. He left home at the age of 17 to visit the wilderness, which in this age is almost anywhere outside of the cities. 95% of the human population have moved to the cities and the dense towns, allowing the rest of the world to be retaken by nature and animals. Franko spent the whole of his adult life exploring the wilds, studying the wildlife, making camps and living off of the land. Plus the odd wrestling fun with the larger animals. Until now, at the age of 40 he has decided to return to his home city. But not for long. Franko has started up a new business revolved around his ship. He plans to take people from the city on adventures and trips around the wilderness, both from the air but also down and dirty teaching them survival techniques. Most of the city dwellers have never seen the wilderness outside of the internet. He's going to be a millionaire! Or so he thinks.
His ship is like a flying double decker bus in scale, it could have held 40+ people. However Franko has customised most of the interior along his travels, to accommodate all of his gear and essentials. Now it can hold around 10-15 people. As this has become a business, the ship is now painted with a variety of  decals to advertise the experience. Largest of them is the name of his company followed by contact details such as Email Address and Mobile Number."

My references so far:

Plus another sheet with the references cropped to areas of importance. My main influence and ship is the classic london double-decker bus, but i need to add other design elements from aircrafts and other vehicles to make my new sci-fi creation believable.

Here are some sketches using my reference and description to come up with something a bit different but somewhat believable:

These two are my favorites out of the batch - though i think they could look good if they were combined, at the bottom is a quick thumbnail to see what it might look like.

Group Ship

For this group project we will be needing a 'hero' ship and a 'bad-guy' ship. I will be handling the enemy ship which will be a short / medium range 2 man ship, sleek and stealthy.

Here is the ref sheet provided by Alex:

Some sketches using the references and experimenting with different shapes.

These 2 are my favourites so far from this batch however i'll need to discuss with alex and get his input before going forward.

FINAL (after xmas)

I decided to go foward with my personal ship design; Franko's Safari. I haven't worked on this at all over the holidays as i was completing client work so that i'll have more time to devote to the group project that we will be starting soon.

Using the drawthrough perpsective technique i drew out my ship in perspective, using my previous sketch as a reference. Once the basic shell was complete i then added in details, using my already set up perspective as a guide.

Next i shall add in texture colour and value to bring the ship to life;
I've included the ship with both a light and dark background as my monitor is still not calibrated and i fear it's going to look stupidly dark and crappy on anyone else's monitor. Really need to invest in a calibrated monitor or device...
